Tao Yuanming

365–427 · 5th century · Also known as Tao Qian

Tao Yuanming, also called Tao Qian, was a Chinese poet of the Eastern Jin and early Liu Song periods. After brief service as an official he retired around 405 to farm in his home district near Mount Lu, and his plain verse on rural life, wine and chrysanthemums made him the model of the recluse poet. His prose fable 'The Peach Blossom Spring' became one of the best-known works of Chinese literature.
