Wang Xizhi

303–361 · 4th century

Wang Xizhi was a Chinese calligrapher of the Eastern Jin dynasty, revered as the 'Sage of Calligraphy'. A member of the powerful Wang clan of Langya, he served as an official in Kuaiji. His preface to the poems composed at the Orchid Pavilion gathering of 353 became the most celebrated work of Chinese calligraphy; no originals survive, but copies and rubbings set the standard for running and regular script for centuries.
