Tarapacá
Tarapacá is a desert region in the far north of Chile, with its capital at Iquique. Formerly a Peruvian province rich in nitrates, it was conquered by Chile in the War of the Pacific and ceded under the Treaty of Ancón of 1883. Its nitrate fields became the mainstay of Chilean exports and public revenue until the rise of synthetic nitrates after the First World War.
