Tariq ibn Ziyad
Tariq ibn Ziyad was a Berber commander in the service of the Umayyad Caliphate who led the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula in 711 CE. After crossing from North Africa he defeated the Visigothic king Roderic, opening the way to the conquest of most of Iberia. The rock of Gibraltar takes its name from him, and accounts of the Umayyad Caliphate discuss him in its account of the empire's western conquests.
