Tarkwa

Tarkwa is a mining town in the Western Region of Ghana, in the former territory of Wassa. Gold had been worked in the area for centuries before European companies opened deep mines there from the late 1870s, served from 1901 by a railway from the port of Sekondi. Tarkwa remains one of the main centres of Ghana's gold mining industry.
