Telys

fl. c. 510 BCE · 6th century BCE

Telys was a popular leader of the Greek city of Sybaris in southern Italy who, around 510 BCE, persuaded the citizens to expel the wealthiest men and confiscate their property. The exiles fled to Croton, which refused to give them up. The quarrel led to war, and Croton under the wrestler Milo destroyed Sybaris. Herodotus and Diodorus describe him as a demagogue or tyrant.
