Tenancy
Tenancy is an arrangement in which cultivators farm land owned by others in return for rent, labour or a share of the harvest. In the later Han Dynasty, large landowners absorbed peasant smallholders into dependent tenancy, removing them from the tax registers. Accounts of the Han Dynasty identify this process as one that eroded the state's tax base and concentrated private power, contributing to the dynasty's decline.
