Tharu people
The Tharu are an indigenous people of the Terai lowlands along the border of Nepal and India. Long resistant to malaria, they farmed the forested plains when few others lived there, and they speak Indo-Aryan Tharu languages. From the 1950s malaria eradication and migration from the hills cost them much land, and many were bonded labourers until the kamaiya system was abolished in 2000.
