Terai
The Terai is a belt of lowland plains, marshes and forest along the foot of the Himalayas, mostly in southern Nepal and the adjoining parts of India. Once malarial and thinly settled, it was home to the Shakya and Koliya republics and to Lumbini, the Buddha's birthplace. Gorkha expansion there led to the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814–1816, and it is now Nepal's main farming region.
