Lumbini
Lumbini is a site in the Rupandehi district of southern Nepal, near the Indian border, revered as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. The emperor Ashoka visited it and set up an inscribed pillar around 249 BCE recording the Buddha's birth there, and the Khasa Malla king Ripumalla added his own inscription in 1312. Rediscovered in 1896, it is a World Heritage Site and a major place of pilgrimage.
