The Fronde

1648–1653 · 17th century · Also known as Fronde

The Fronde was a series of revolts in France between 1648 and 1653 during the minority of Louis XIV. It began with the Parlement of Paris resisting new taxes imposed by Cardinal Mazarin and grew into a rebellion of great nobles led by princes such as Condé. The royal family twice fled Paris, but the revolts failed, and memories of the disorder encouraged Louis XIV's later absolutism.
