The Weald
The Weald is an area of south-east England between the North and South Downs, covering parts of Kent, Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire. In Anglo-Saxon times it was a great forest, Andredesweald, that separated the South Saxons from their neighbours and was used mainly for seasonal pasture. From Roman times to the 18th century it was also an important iron-producing district.
