The Wretched of the Earth

1961 · 20th century · Also known as Les Damnés de la Terre

The Wretched of the Earth is a book by the Martinique-born psychiatrist and writer Frantz Fanon, published in French in 1961 shortly before his death, with a preface by Jean-Paul Sartre. Drawing on the Algerian War of Independence, in which Fanon supported the National Liberation Front, it analyses the psychology of colonialism and defends violent struggle against it. It became a central text of anti-colonial and Black liberation movements.
