Thiệu Trị

1807–1847 · 19th century · Also known as Thieu Tri

Thiệu Trị was the third emperor of the Nguyen dynasty of Vietnam, ruling from 1841 to 1847 after his father Minh Mạng. Faced with revolt in Cambodia, he withdrew Vietnamese forces from much of the country, accepting shared influence with Siam. He continued restrictions on Catholicism, and in 1847 French warships attacked Vietnamese vessels at Da Nang shortly before his death.
