Third Taiwan Strait Crisis

1995–1996 · 20th century

The Third Taiwan Strait Crisis was a period of military tension in 1995–1996, triggered by Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui's visit to the United States in June 1995. The People's Republic of China fired missiles into waters near Taiwan and held exercises before Taiwan's first direct presidential election in March 1996. The United States sent two aircraft carrier groups to the region, and Lee won the election.
