Thomas Picton

1758–1815 · 18th century

Sir Thomas Picton (1758–1815) was a Welsh-born British general who governed Trinidad after its capture from Spain in 1797. His harsh rule, including the authorised torture of a young girl, Luisa Calderón, led to his trial in London. He later commanded a division under Wellington in the Peninsular War and was killed at Waterloo in 1815.
