Tichitt culture

Also known as Tichitt

The Tichitt culture was a prehistoric culture of stone-built settlements in south-eastern Mauritania, centred on the escarpments of Dhar Tichitt and Dhar Walata. Accounts of the Ghana Empire trace the origins of Ghana, or Wagadou, to this culture, which it dates archaeologically to around 1600 BCE. It is regarded as one of the earliest examples of complex settlement in West Africa.
