Tolfa
Tolfa is a hill town in the Tolfa Mountains of Lazio, north-west of Rome. The discovery of rich alum deposits there in the early 1460s gave the Papal States a lucrative monopoly of a mineral vital to the European cloth industry, replacing supplies lost when the Ottomans took Phocaea. The alum was mined for centuries under papal concession, for a time by the Medici bank.
