Tonghui Canal

1293 · 13th century

The Tonghui Canal was a canal designed by the engineer Guo Shoujing and completed in 1293, linking the Yuan capital Dadu (Beijing) with Tongzhou and the northern end of the Grand Canal. By supplying it with spring water from the western hills, Guo allowed grain barges to sail into the city itself, and the canal remained in use for centuries.
