Trans-Iranian Railway
The Trans-Iranian Railway is a railway built between 1927 and 1938 under Reza Shah, linking the Caspian Sea with the Persian Gulf by way of Tehran. Financed by taxes on tea and sugar rather than foreign loans, it crosses the Alborz and Zagros mountains on hundreds of bridges and tunnels. In the Second World War it carried Allied supplies to the Soviet Union; it is a World Heritage Site.
