Treaty of Asunción

1991 · 20th century

The Treaty of Asunción was signed on 26 March 1991 by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay in the Paraguayan capital. It created Mercosur, the Southern Common Market, committing the four states to free movement of goods and a common external tariff, and it built on earlier rapprochement between Argentina and Brazil after their return to democracy.
