Triple Alliance (1882)

1882 · 19th century

The Triple Alliance was a secret defensive alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy, concluded on 20 May 1882 and renewed several times. Italy joined after France seized Tunisia in 1881, ending its diplomatic isolation. The alliance stood against the Triple Entente of France, Russia and Britain, but Italy stayed neutral in 1914 and in 1915 joined the Entente under the Treaty of London.
