Tsilhqot'in War

1864 · 19th century · Also known as Chilcotin War

The Tsilhqot'in War was a conflict in 1864 between the Tsilhqot'in people of the Chilcotin plateau and the colony of British Columbia. Tsilhqot'in warriors killed members of a road-building crew working for Alfred Waddington, who planned a route from Bute Inlet to the goldfields, and other settlers. Several chiefs who came to negotiate were arrested and six were hanged in 1864 and 1865; British Columbia exonerated them in 2014.
