Tsu, Mie

Tsu is the capital of Mie Prefecture in central Japan, on the western shore of Ise Bay. Its medieval port was ruined by the earthquake of 1498, and it was refounded as a castle town by Tōdō Takatora after he received the domain in 1608. In the Edo period Tsu prospered from pilgrims travelling on the road to the Ise shrines, and it later became the capital of Mie Prefecture.
