Tuʻi Haʻatakalaua
The Tuʻi Haʻatakalaua was the second line of Tongan kings, created in the 15th century after the assassination of the Tuʻi Tonga Takalaua. His son Kauʻulufonua I avenged him and gave his brother Moʻungāmotuʻa authority over everyday government, while the Tuʻi Tonga kept sacred rank. In the 17th century a junior branch of this line, the Tuʻi Kanokupolu, took over its executive role, and from it descends the present royal house.
