Ulick na gCeann Burke, 1st Earl of Clanricarde
Ulick na gCeann Burke was the head of the Clanricarde Burkes of south Galway and the first Earl of Clanricarde. In 1543, under Henry VIII's policy of surrender and regrant, he gave up his lands and Gaelic lordship to the crown and received them back with an English earldom. His byname, 'of the heads', is said to come from a mound of enemies' heads he raised after a battle. He died in 1544.
