Earl of Clanricarde

1543 · 16th century

Earl of Clanricarde is a title in the Peerage of Ireland created in 1543 for Ulick na gCeann Burke, chief of the Burkes of south County Galway, under Henry VIII's policy of surrender and regrant. The earls held lands around Loughrea and Portumna, and the later holders were mostly loyal to the crown during the Tudor and Stuart wars in Ireland. The 5th Earl was made Marquess of Clanricarde in 1646.
