University of Dublin

1592 · 16th century · Also known as Trinity College Dublin

The University of Dublin is Ireland's oldest university, founded in 1592 by a charter of Elizabeth I, with Trinity College Dublin as its only college. For centuries a Protestant institution of the Anglo-Irish establishment, it educated figures such as Jonathan Swift and Edmund Burke. Its graduates elected members to the Irish and later the British parliaments, and they still elect senators in Ireland.
