1551 · 16th century

The University of Dillingen was founded in 1551 by Cardinal Otto Truchsess von Waldburg, prince-bishop of Augsburg, in his residence town of Dillingen on the Danube. Run by the Jesuits from 1563, it trained Catholic clergy for southern Germany and became a stronghold of the Counter-Reformation. It was reduced to a lyceum in 1803.
