Vaal Triangle

The Vaal Triangle is an industrial region on the Vaal River south of Johannesburg, formed by the towns of Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark and Sasolburg and their townships, among them Sharpeville and Sebokeng. Its steel and chemical works made it an industrial heartland. In September 1984 protests there against rent increases began the township uprising that spread across South Africa in the mid-1980s.
