Vaal River
The Vaal River is the largest tributary of the Orange River in South Africa, flowing about 1,120 kilometres westwards from Mpumalanga. In the 19th century it marked the boundary between the Orange Free State to the south and the South African Republic, the Transvaal, which took its name from lying beyond the Vaal. Its dams now supply water to the cities of Gauteng.
