Potchefstroom is a city in North West province, South Africa, on the Mooi River. Founded by Voortrekkers under Andries Hendrik Potgieter in 1838, it was the first European town north of the Vaal River and the first capital of the South African Republic until Pretoria replaced it in 1860. It is now a university town, home to a campus of North-West University.
