Sand River Convention

1852 · 19th century

The Sand River Convention was an agreement signed on 17 January 1852 between British commissioners and Boer leaders headed by Andries Pretorius. Britain recognised the independence of the emigrant Boers living north of the Vaal River, undertook not to ally with African peoples beyond it, and agreed that the Boers could buy ammunition while Africans could not. It led to the founding of the South African Republic.
