Vakhsh River

The Vakhsh is a river of Tajikistan, about 520 km long, formed by the Kyzylsu, which rises in Kyrgyzstan, and flowing south-west to join the Panj and form the Amu Darya. In the Soviet period it was harnessed by a cascade of dams, including the Nurek dam, and its lower valley was irrigated for cotton. The very large Rogun dam is being built upstream.
