Valentinian I

321–375 · 4th century · Also known as Valentinian the Great

Valentinian I was Roman emperor from 364 to 375. A Pannonian officer acclaimed by the army after Jovian's death, he gave the East to his brother Valens and ruled the West himself, spending most of his reign fortifying the Rhine and Danube frontiers against the Alemanni, Quadi and Sarmatians. He died of a stroke at Brigetio in 375 while angrily addressing envoys of the Quadi.
