Verbundbrief

1396 · 14th century

The Verbundbrief was the constitution of the city of Cologne adopted in 1396 after the overthrow of the patrician government. It gave political power to 22 corporations called Gaffeln, largely based on the guilds, which elected the city council. It remained in force, with amendments, until the French occupation in 1797.
