Rhine Province

1822–1946 · 19th century · Also known as Rhenish Prussia

The Rhine Province was a province of Prussia in western Germany, formed in 1822 from lands on both banks of the Rhine that Prussia gained at the Congress of Vienna, with Koblenz as its capital. It absorbed many former ecclesiastical states, imperial cities and small principalities, and Cologne became its largest city. It was divided after the Second World War.
