Rhine Crisis
The Rhine Crisis of 1840 was a diplomatic confrontation in which the French government of Adolphe Thiers, humiliated in the Eastern Question, raised demands for the Rhine as France's eastern frontier. The threat provoked a wave of German national feeling, expressed in patriotic songs such as Die Wacht am Rhein, and led the German Confederation to strengthen its federal fortresses, including new ones at Ulm and Rastatt.
