Verapaz
Verapaz is a mountainous region of north-central Guatemala, today divided into the departments of Alta Verapaz and Baja Verapaz. Its Maya peoples resisted Spanish conquest, and the Spanish called it Tezulutlán, the 'land of war'. From 1537 Dominican friars led by Bartolomé de las Casas brought it under Spanish rule by peaceful missions, and it was renamed Verapaz, 'true peace'.
