International Railways of Central America

1912 · 20th century · Also known as IRCA

International Railways of Central America (IRCA) was a United States-owned railway company formed in 1912 that controlled most of Guatemala's railways as well as lines in El Salvador. Closely linked to the United Fruit Company, which became a major shareholder, it ran the line from Guatemala City to Puerto Barrios on the Caribbean and used its monopoly over freight to dominate the country's export trade for decades.
