Jorge Ubico

1878–1946 · 20th century · Also known as Jorge Ubico Castañeda

Jorge Ubico (1878–1946) was a Guatemalan general who ruled as president from 1931 to 1944. He built roads and cut corruption but governed as a dictator, favoured the United Fruit Company and replaced debt peonage with a vagrancy law that forced indigenous people to work. Protests by students, teachers and workers forced him to resign in July 1944, opening the way to the October Revolution.
