Alta Verapaz
Alta Verapaz is a department of northern Guatemala with its capital at Cobán, a region of humid highlands and forests inhabited largely by Q'eqchi' Maya. From the late nineteenth century German immigrant planters developed coffee estates there, worked by indigenous labour under forced-labour drafts and debt peonage, making it one of the country's main coffee and later cardamom regions.
