Via Salaria

Also known as Salt Road

The Via Salaria was an ancient road running north-east from Rome through Sabine territory and across the Apennines to the Adriatic coast near Castrum Truentinum. Its name, the salt road, comes from its early use for carrying salt from the Tiber mouth to the Sabines, and it is among the oldest routes of central Italy. Fidenae, just north of Rome, owed its importance to its position on the road and the Tiber.
