Castrum

Also known as castra

A castrum (plural castra) was a Roman military camp or fortress, laid out on a standard rectangular plan with gates and intersecting main streets. Permanent castra housed the legions along the frontiers of the Roman Empire. Many modern European cities grew directly from Roman castra or administrative centres.
