Vicente Filísola

1789–1850 · 19th century

Vicente Filísola (1789–1850) was an Italian-born soldier in Spanish and then Mexican service. Sent by Agustín de Iturbide to Central America in 1822, he carried out its annexation to the First Mexican Empire and in 1823 took San Salvador, which had resisted. After Iturbide's fall he called the congress that declared Central American independence in July 1823; he later served as Santa Anna's second-in-command in Texas in 1836.
