Vienna General Hospital
The Vienna General Hospital was founded by Emperor Joseph II in 1784 as one of the largest hospitals in Europe, combining care for the sick with teaching. In the nineteenth century it was the centre of the Vienna medical school, where Ignaz Semmelweis discovered the cause of childbed fever. Its modern successor is still the university hospital of Vienna.
