c. 800–c. 1200 · 9th century

Vikramashila was a great Buddhist monastery and centre of learning in the Bhagalpur district of Bihar, India, founded by the Pala emperor Dharmapala around 800. With Nalanda it was one of the leading universities of Buddhist India, specialising in tantric Buddhism, and its scholars, including Atisha, carried teachings to Tibet. It was destroyed around 1200 during the Turkish conquest of Bihar.
