Person
Visvaldis
Visvaldis, called Vissewalde in German sources, was the prince of Jersika on the Daugava in present-day Latvia in the early 13th century. Of mixed Latgalian and Rus' background and a vassal of Polotsk, he resisted the Livonian crusaders, but after Bishop Albert of Riga sacked Jersika in 1209 he had to accept part of his lands back as a fief from the bishop. He is a figure of Latvian national memory.
