Vixen affair

1836 · 19th century

The Vixen affair was a diplomatic crisis of 1836 between Britain and Russia. The British schooner Vixen, sent with salt to the Circassian coast to test Russia's claimed blockade, was seized by a Russian warship at Sudzhuk-Kale, near modern Novorossiysk. Britain did not contest the seizure, but the affair made the Circassian struggle a cause in British politics and the press.
