Vlad the Impaler

c. 1430–1477 · 15th century · Also known as Vlad III Dracula, Vlad Țepeș

Vlad III, known as Vlad the Impaler or Dracula, was voivode of Wallachia in 1448, from 1456 to 1462 and in 1476. Notorious for impaling enemies, he fought the Ottomans and in 1462 launched a night attack on the camp of Mehmed II, but was soon driven out and held prisoner in Hungary. He was killed in 1476 or 1477. His name later inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula.
